Coordinates: 55.756°N 1.993°W Spittal is a village in northern Northumberland, England. It is part of Berwick-upon-Tweed and is situated on the coast to the east of Tweedmouth. Spittal Beach is considered one of the best beaches in Northumberland. [1]

Spittal beach is a sandy beach with shallow water at high tide on the southern side of Tweed estuary. Its Coast Path runs down from Berwick to Holy Island and beyond that down to Druridge Bay. The beach is backed by a promenade and seaside shops.Visitors have been coming here since the 18th century, when Spittal was a popular spa and bathing resort.

Berwick-upon-Tweed 's biggest beach can be found in the former mining suburb of Spittal, about a mile from the centre of town on the south side of the River Tweed. Deposition of sediment at the river mouth has created a tidal sand bar jutting north, while in the other direction the beach extends.

About Spittal Beach This sandy beach lies within the Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and runs from the south side of the mouth of the River Tweed to the beginning of the cliffs at Bear's Head. It's a very popular beach with much to do in the area, including swimming, fishing, jet skiing, surfing and wind surfing and water skiing.

Spittal Beach a most wonderful place, in Northumberland

Spittal - Cocklawburn Cliff Walk. We started this walk from the car park at the north end of Spittal Beach beside the old chimney. The route we followed took us along the promenade and up onto the cliff top footpath beside the railway. Turning inland towards Scremerston we returned along tracks and footpaths through the countryside and back.

Directions Across the river, Spittal has a beautiful family-friendly beach with sand for sandcastles, an excellent play-park and an exciting splash-park area (which operates in the Summer months whenever possible) as well as amusements, toilet and café facilities in the Venetian pavilion of 1928.

Spittal Beach, Northumberland. The fine beach at Spittal stretches from the south side of the mouth of the River Tweed to the start of the cliffs at Bears Head. The promenade at Spittal gives a clue to it's history. It was once a busy seaside holiday destination.

The predominantly sandy beach is backed by a promenade and stretches down from the mouth of the River Tweed to the cliffs at Bear Head and lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wading birds can usually be found here and it is not uncommon to spot seals bobbing up and down in the surf, or even the occasional dolphin.
